“I Hate It Here”: What Our Jokes About Ourselves Are Really Saying If you spend any time around Gen Z or, let’s be honest, on the internet at all, you’ve probably heard some version of this sentence: “If one more thing goes wrong today, I’m going to jump off a cliff.” It’s said jokingly. Casually. In response to spilled coffee, a slow Wi-Fi connection, or an email that starts with “Just circling back.” No one means it literally. And yet, it’s everywhere. Self-degrading language has become a kind of shorthand online. We exaggerate our distress for humor, bond over mutual burnout, and soften discomfort with irony.
