Abuse Counseling

Safety First & Getting Started

How therapy begins when you're still in an unsafe situation — or newly out of one.

If you are currently in danger, please call 911 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (text START to 88788). You can also chat with an advocate at thehotline.org. Advocates are free, confidential, and available 24/7.

Therapy can begin whether you are still in the relationship, planning to leave, recently out, or years past it. Our first sessions focus on safety, stabilization, and understanding what you're carrying — never on pressuring you to make a decision on someone else's timeline.

What early sessions often include

  • Talking through what feels safe to share and what to save for later.
  • Grounding and nervous-system tools for hard moments.
  • Safety planning if you're still in the relationship or considering leaving.
  • Connecting you with local advocates, shelters, or legal resources when you want that.
  • Confidentiality — what is and isn't kept private, in plain language.
