Adoption Process Counseling

I'm Looking to Adopt

For people and couples exploring adoption as a path to growing their family.

Adopting a child can be incredibly rewarding for both the adoptive parent and the child. It's often one of the first options presented to couples having difficulty conceiving, but many couples choose adoption whether or not they can have children biologically.

If you're considering growing your family through adoption, working with a certified adoption counselor can help you better understand the process, answer your questions, and ultimately decide if adoption is the right choice for you.

Common minimum requirements to adopt

  • Be at least 18 years old (most agencies prefer 21+).
  • Single or married applicants welcome; many states do not restrict adoption by marital status or sexual orientation (rules vary).
  • Pass a background screening with no disqualifying offenses.
  • Complete an approved home study.
  • Show stable income and housing sufficient to meet a child's needs.
  • Be in reasonably good physical and mental health.

Questions worth answering early

  • Domestic infant, foster-to-adopt, or international adoption?
  • Open, semi-open, or closed adoption?
  • Age range, sibling groups, or children with special needs?
  • Budget for agency fees, legal fees, and travel.
